A car bomb explosion near a Syrian Defence Ministry building in Damascus killed at least one soldier and wounded more than 20 people on Tuesday, according to authorities.

Members of an army unit discovered an improvised explosive device planted near the site in the Bab Sharqi district of the capital. As they moved to defuse it, a car bomb detonated in the same area, the Defence Ministry said in a statement carried by state media.

At least 21 people were wounded and transferred to nearby hospitals for medical treatment following the blast. The explosion was heard across several districts of Damascus, with gunfire reported afterward, according to eyewitness accounts.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the explosion occurred near the entrance of the Armament Administration headquarters in eastern Damascus. State-run al-Ikhbariya TV initially reported the incident.

The Defence Ministry did not provide additional details about the circumstances of the explosion or the identity of those responsible.
