Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Friday that he had received successful treatment for early-stage prostate cancer, disclosing the information as his annual medical report was released.
In a post on social media, the 76-year-old said that during routine medical monitoring, doctors discovered a malignant tumour measuring less than one centimetre. Netanyahu said targeted treatment had removed the problem and left no trace of it.
Netanyahu explained that he had undergone surgery for an enlarged benign prostate approximately one year and a half ago and had been under routine medical monitoring since then. During the most recent checkup, the small tumour was detected. Medical examination determined it was an early-stage malignant tumour without any spread or metastasis.
According to the medical report released with his statement, Netanyahu received radiation therapy for the early-stage prostate cancer. Neither the medical report nor Netanyahu specified the exact timing of the treatment.
Netanyahu stated he was "in excellent physical condition" and described the medical issue as minor. He thanked the doctors and medical teams at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem for their care.
In his statement, Netanyahu said he had requested a two-month delay in the publication of his health record. He explained the delay was intended to prevent the report's release during the height of the conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran, to avoid giving Tehran an opportunity to spread "false propaganda against Israel."
Netanyahu added that he had undergone "a few short sessions of treatment" that resolved the issue completely. He urged Israeli citizens to monitor their health, undergo medical examinations, and follow medical guidance.
The medical report otherwise indicated that Netanyahu was in good health. In March, during the fighting with Iran, social media rumours and Iranian state media had circulated claims about Netanyahu's health status.
