Qatar denies detaining Iranian pilots after aircraft downing

Qatar has denied claims by Iranian officials that the country is holding Iranian pilots in secret detention following the downing of their aircraft during hostilities earlier this year.

A spokesman for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed surprise on Saturday at what he characterized as "misleading statements" from Iranian officials. The spokesman reaffirmed that Qatari forces are not holding any surviving aircrew members.

"We categorically deny the claims circulating regarding the detention of Iranian pilots and are surprised by these misleading statements at this particular time, amid the ongoing diplomatic effort," the spokesman said.

The denial comes as tensions remain elevated in the region following the earlier military incident in which an Iranian aircraft was downed. The specific circumstances surrounding the downing and the status of the aircrew have been subjects of dispute between the two countries.

Qatar's statement emphasized that the denial was being made during a period when diplomatic efforts were ongoing, suggesting that the country views the Iranian allegations as potentially complicating broader negotiations or discussions between the parties.
