Trump threatens Iran while Vance pursues talks in Switzerland

Vice President Vance met Iranian officials in Switzerland on Sunday as President Trump warned of further military action against Iran over proxy activity in Lebanon.

Vice President JD Vance attended high-level talks aimed at advancing a deal to end the Middle East conflict at the Bürgenstock Resort near Lucerne, Switzerland, on Sunday, June 21. The talks included meetings with Iranian officials and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The diplomatic engagement occurred as President Trump issued a public threat against Iran on social media. "Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don't, we'll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!" Trump wrote in a post on Sunday.

The tensions stem from ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group. In response, Iran's military announced Saturday that it had closed the Strait of Hormuz, citing continued Israeli strikes against Hezbollah positions.

Iran stated that the U.S. failure to rein in Israel violated aspects of negotiations. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, represents a significant escalation in regional tensions.

The contrasting messages from Trump and Vance reflect differing approaches to the Iran situation. Trump's threat of military action came as Vance was actively engaged in diplomatic discussions with Iranian representatives. The timing underscores the administration's dual-track approach to the Middle East conflict, combining military deterrence with diplomatic engagement.
