U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced major changes to the military Wednesday during a "State of the Force" address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, delivered to junior officers and enlisted leaders.
The Pentagon will establish a new drone command as part of the restructuring effort. Hegseth also announced plans to cut 20% of the nation's generals and admirals, a significant reduction in senior military leadership.
Beyond the command and personnel changes, the Defense Department will create an Office of Religious Affairs. The department also plans to build a new military base for the first time in 40 years, according to Hegseth's remarks.
The Defense Secretary announced that the Pentagon will launch an effort to study the future of warfare. The initiative will be led in part by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Hegseth said.
