Bonnie Tyler, the British pop singer whose raspy voice defined hits including "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding Out for a Hero," died Wednesday at age 75 at a hospital in Portugal.

Tyler died following complications from emergency intestinal surgery, according to her family. She had been hospitalized in delicate condition for several weeks before her death. Her family announced the news on her Facebook page, requesting privacy to face the tragedy.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler grew up in a working-class household as the daughter of a coal miner, alongside five siblings. She spent her childhood singing in front of a mirror with a hairbrush as a microphone while listening to records by Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, and the Beatles.

"Total Eclipse of the Heart," released in 1983, became her signature song. Producer Jim Steinman wrote the composition and sought Tyler's voice for the track after it was initially offered to American singer Meat Loaf. Meat Loaf's record label wanted him to write his own songs for his 1983 album "Midnight at the Lost and Found," leading to the rejection of both "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and another Steinman composition, "Making Love Out of Nothing at All." Steinman later gave "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" to soft rock duo Air Supply, which turned it into a hit.

"Holding Out for a Hero" was written specifically for the 1984 film "Footloose: Ritmo Louco," where it accompanied a tractor-racing scene. The song became one of her most recognizable tracks.

Tyler's music extended beyond radio play into film and television. Her songs appeared in numerous productions across generations. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was featured in the 2010 film "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," in an iconic audition scene where the protagonist unexpectedly sings the song well while auditioning for the school play role of Dorothy.

In the 1980s, Tyler recorded a duet with Brazilian musician Fábio Júnior titled "Sem Limite pra Sonhar (Reaching for the Infinite)," which appeared as the opening track on Fábio Júnior's self-titled album released in February 1987. The collaboration came three years after "Total Eclipse of the Heart" achieved success and shortly after Fábio Júnior's own career breakthrough. The song was composed by Claudio Rabello and based on the American composition "Reaching for the Infinite Heart."

Tributes from entertainment figures and political leaders followed her death. Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, a distant cousin of Tyler, posted on Instagram: "My heart is broken. Our Queen Bonnie….. you have been such an important part of my life. Sleep well, beautiful lady." Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said on X: "I am deeply saddened by the news of Bonnie Tyler's passing. Wales has lost a true icon whose music brought joy."

Tyler's career spanned nearly five decades, during which she became a mainstay on playlists worldwide. Her distinctive raspy voice became her trademark, setting her apart in the pop music landscape of the 1980s and beyond.
