Spotify announced a new labeling system to identify artists with artificially generated identities, introducing a tag called "AI Persona" designed to increase transparency for users distinguishing between real performers and AI-created ones.
Beginning mid-September, the "AI Persona" label will appear across multiple locations on the platform: in artist profile banners, the "About" section, search results, and alongside songs within playlists. The label will be visible on mobile devices.
As of today, artists can voluntarily declare through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. However, Spotify will not rely solely on self-reporting. The company stated it will employ human review combined with AI-based investigation tools to apply the label to profiles.
Music from profiles tagged as "AI Persona" will be excluded from personalized playlist recommendations by default. Users who specifically request to receive such music will still have access to it through other means on the platform.
Spotify said the initiative aims to inform subscribers which songs were created by actual artists and which were generated artificially. The company framed the effort as a transparency measure for its user base.
Artists whose profiles are tagged by Spotify through the company's review process will receive notification of the label application.
