NATO air defenses shoot down Iranian ballistic missile headed toward Turkish airspace

Turkey's defense ministry announced Wednesday that a ballistic missile fired from Iran heading toward Turkish airspace had been shot down by NATO air defenses, marking a potential escalation in the widening regional conflict.

The ministry did not specify the missile's intended target. NATO air defense units intercepted the ballistic munitions as they traveled across Syrian and Iraqi airspace toward Turkish territory, according to officials. Remnants of the ordnance fell in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province, in south-central Turkey near the border with Syria. No casualties or injuries were reported from the debris impact.

The interception occurred on the fifth day of fighting between Israel, the United States, and Iran. Hundreds of people in Iran and other regional countries have been killed in the conflict, which began Saturday following attacks by the U.S. and Israel.

Turkey, a NATO ally sharing a 300-mile border with Iran, said it reserved "the right to respond to any hostile action against it" and warned "parties to refrain from any measure that could aggravate the conflict." Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi following the incident, reiterating to his counterpart that "any action that could escalate the conflict must be avoided."

The Iranian government did not immediately respond to Turkey's claim regarding the missile interception. The U.S., Israel, and Iran showed little sign of reaching an accord to end the fighting as of Wednesday.

In related developments, Lebanon reported six deaths from Israeli attacks, while in Kuwait a child was killed by shrapnel from an Iranian missile that had been shot down. The United States said it had assigned 50,000 personnel to the conflict.
