A 51-year-old cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash in the Bronx on Tuesday evening, authorities said. Police are searching for the driver of the vehicle involved.
The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Bruckner Boulevard near Longwood Avenue in the Longwood section. According to the NYPD, a person driving a BMW struck the cyclist while traveling southbound. The impact set off a chain reaction involving multiple parked and moving vehicles.
After hitting the cyclist, the BMW collided with parked vehicles on the street, including a Lexus RX 350 and a Chevy Camaro. The BMW then struck a Hyundai Sonata that was being driven eastbound. The Sonata subsequently crashed into a parked Volkswagen.
The cyclist was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to his sister-in-law, the man was a father of five and worked as a mechanic. He had been riding home from work along his usual route when the crash occurred.
A 38-year-old woman who was driving the Hyundai Sonata was also hospitalized. Police said she is in stable condition.
The BMW driver fled the scene on foot immediately after the crash. The identity of the driver remains unknown. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday evening. The NYPD said the investigation is ongoing.
