Human remains were discovered inside the chimney of P.S./I.S. 113 Anthony J. Pranzo in Glendale, Queens, on Tuesday morning. Police received a 911 call just before 9 a.m. regarding the discovery.

An exterminator working at the school detected a foul odor and called authorities. Upon opening the ash dump, the exterminator found a shoe and then felt a foot, according to a law enforcement source. Police were then contacted.

Upon arrival, investigators located the human remains inside the school's chimney. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death.

No students or school staff were present at the time of the discovery. The 2025-26 academic year for New York City public schools ended the previous week. It was not immediately clear whether students had been in the building during the final week of classes.

The school is currently under construction. The Department of Education has been contacted for comment.
