A New York State assemblyman has called on the U.S. Department of Justice to open a civil rights investigation into New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani following a pair of stabbings on Manhattan's Upper West Side that authorities are examining as potential hate crimes.
New York State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov, who represents District 45 in Brooklyn, made the call during an End Jew Hatred rally in New York City on Sunday. Novakhov said he was sending the DOJ a formal letter requesting an investigation into New York State and New York City, with particular focus on what he characterized as Mamdani's conduct toward the Jewish population.
"If the DOJ stepped in to protect Jewish students at Columbia, it must now step in to protect Jewish New Yorkers," Novakhov wrote in an Instagram post that included video of his announcement. He referenced a federal probe into alleged antisemitism at Columbia University as precedent for federal intervention.
The stabbings that prompted the call occurred on the Upper West Side. One suspect was arrested after allegedly yelling "Allahu Akbar" while stabbing two men in what authorities are treating as a potential hate crime incident.
