New York City is advancing plans for a busway along Tremont Avenue in the Bronx, marking the first such dedicated bus lane in the borough. The project is expected to be completed later this year.
The corridor currently serves approximately 39,000 daily riders. The initiative aims to address congestion and safety concerns on the heavily trafficked route.
The planned improvements include safety enhancements at eight intersections designed to shorten pedestrian crossing distances and reduce vehicle turning speeds. An eastbound busway will run from Third Avenue to Southern Boulevard, while a westbound busway will extend from Southern Boulevard to Belmont Avenue. An offset shared bus-and-bike lane is planned for the eastbound direction between Webster Avenue and Third Avenue.
Busways are lanes reserved exclusively for buses, emergency vehicles, and trucks. Enforcement is conducted through bus-mounted cameras and the New York Police Department. According to city officials, busways in the city have demonstrated the ability to increase bus speeds by as much as 60 percent.
