New York City is temporarily co-naming 18 streets across Manhattan to honor the New York Knicks' NBA championship victory. The Department of Transportation has installed orange and blue signs featuring players' names and jersey numbers along Sixth and Seventh avenues, stretching from Greenwich Village through Midtown.
The street co-namings will remain in place for four weeks, according to a release from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn.
The temporary street signs correspond to each player's jersey number. Along Sixth Avenue, the locations include West Houston Street for Jordan Clarkson #00, Bleeker Street for Dillon Jones #1, Minetta Lane for Miles McBride #2, West 3 Street for Josh Hart #3, West 4 Street for Pacme Dadiet #4, Washington Place for Jose Alvarado #5, West 8 Street for OG Anunoby #8, and West 9 Street for Kevin McCullar Jr. #9.
Along Seventh Avenue, the co-namings include Seventh Avenue South and West 11 Street for Jalen Brunson #11, West 13 Street for Tyler Kolek #13, West 20 Street for Jeremy Sochan #20, and West 23 Street for additional players.
Mayor Mamdani said in a statement that the street signs serve as a tribute to the players who delivered the championship. "For as long as we live, every New Yorker will remember the feeling of our city coming together — not because of tragedy or adversity, but out of joy and happiness," Mamdani said. "These street signs are a tribute to the players who delivered the championship generations of fans waited their whole lives to see and the city that stood behind them every step of the way," he added.
The city is also planning celebration events. Queens is hosting a rally at Borough Hall, with events scheduled for Saturday at noon and 1 p.m., July 2 at 2:30 p.m. and all day, July 4 at 1 p.m., July 6 at 10:30 a.m., and July 6 at 7 p.m.
