NYPD investigates video of people emerging from sewer near Penn Station

The NYPD is investigating a video showing three people climbing out of a manhole near Penn Station wearing overalls and headlamps last Tuesday at approximately 4 a.m.

The incident occurred on Seventh Avenue by 32nd Street, near Madison Square Garden. Video posted to social media shows the individuals emerging from the sewer one by one. The footage was posted to TikTok on Friday, according to NBC News.

Detectives believe many of the underground scavengers caught on camera are migrants searching for items of value in the sewer system. No arrests have been made in connection with the most recent Penn Station incident, according to authorities. However, detectives said they have identified or caught up with individuals involved in other similar cases. Those individuals were either charged with low-level crimes that were dismissed because they are first-time offenders, or their prosecutions were declined altogether, detectives said.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection inspected the sewers in the area following the incident and found no damage to the infrastructure. The agency stated that entering the sewers is "both illegal and extremely dangerous," noting that sewers can contain numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly substances.

The video follows similar underground sightings in Brooklyn and Queens earlier this year. It remains unclear whether all three incidents are connected. An NYPD spokesperson confirmed the police are aware of the video and said the investigation is ongoing.
