A third body was found Saturday in a five-story Bronx apartment building where a fire and explosion occurred Wednesday afternoon, the FDNY said.
The incident took place on East 209th Street between Decatur Avenue and Parkside Place in the Norwood section. Surveillance video captured glass and debris being blown across the street by what officials described as "some sort of explosion." A fire then broke out, engulfing multiple floors and growing to five alarms. Hundreds of first responders spent hours battling the blaze.
The first body was discovered inside the building on the day of the fire. A second body was found Friday. The third victim was recovered Saturday, according to officials.
The FDNY eventually had to pull crews out of the building after a third-floor apartment collapsed into the second floor. The medical examiner has not confirmed the identities of the victims.
A relative told CBS News New York she believes two of the victims are her aunt and uncle, Mary Ann Martin, 65, and Lester Martin, 70. A displaced tenant who knew the couple said they were beloved members of the community. "They were awesome. They were very friendly," Rosalie Serrano said. "They had grandchildren that used to come and spend the weekends here with them."
At least 14 others were injured when the blaze broke out Wednesday afternoon. One person remains hospitalized. Dozens of building residents have been displaced.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, according to the FDNY.
