Gotham FC defeated Racing Louisville FC 1-0 on Saturday at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, in an NWSL regular season match. The win marked the third in a row for the home team.
Jaedyn Shaw scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute. The match was played before an attendance of 6,193 spectators.
The match was mostly dominated by the squad led by Juan Carlos Amorós, who managed to replicate the victories achieved in the last two matches with a strategy that is paying off. He left behind the lack of goals from the first few matches, solidifying a style of play that is becoming increasingly established within the league.
One of the changes that have been part of this winning strategy by Amorós is placing Midge Purce as a right-back, who stated she is "still adapting" to her new position. Nevertheless, her performance has been satisfactory, receiving an 8.0 rating from Sofascore.
Among the high points within the winning squad, Jordynn Dudley stands out, becoming the second player in club history to participate in goal situations—either by assisting or scoring—in three consecutive matches. The former Florida State standout has more than proven the value placed on her when signing for Gotham FC, being a disruptive factor across all lines of play.
Dudley, 21, provides a direct and aggressive style of play, which, combined with notable speed, allows her not only to participate in the attack but also to draw defenders and quickly drop into defensive positions when necessary.
For her part, Rose Lavelle also had a significant impact on the game, constantly playing "box-to-box" to offer a clear outlet for the team, in coordination with McCaskill and Howell.
A concerning moment occurred in the 58th minute when Rose Lavelle had to be treated for a suspected muscular issue. Her substitution in the 71st minute was a precaution, according to Amorós.
While the match did not have many major threats in favor of Racing Louisville, they were a team that pressed in the second half and tried to prevent Gotham from leaving their area at both the beginning and the end of the second period. That situation, in the first instance, was reversed by the home side, who even forced the visitors on several occasions to make imprecise passes that ended in a throw-in for Gotham.
Other than that, it was a calm encounter on a pleasant day for Amorós's side, who with this result, Gotham FC accumulated 12 points, sitting in fourth position (behind San Diego Wave with 15, Washington Spirit with 15, and Portland Thorns with 19). Racing Louisville FC, for its part, remains with 5 points in second-to-last place.
Next Saturday, Gotham FC will host Boston Legacy (6:30 PM New York time), while Racing Louisville will do the same by hosting the league leaders Portland Thorns next Friday (6:30 PM Louisville time).
