The New York Police Department has stepped up patrols throughout New York City following Saturday's joint U.S. attack on Iran, according to officials.
The NYPD and other emergency management officials are closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East and coordinating with federal and international partners to ensure the conflict does not lead to repercussions in the city, authorities said.
As a precautionary measure, the NYPD is enhancing patrols at sensitive locations throughout the city, including diplomatic locations such as the United Nations and consulates, as well as cultural and religious sites across New York.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated there is currently no threat, though experts cautioned that the situation could change. Jewish and Iranian New Yorkers were reported to be on high alert following the overseas strikes.
The security measures come after New York City residents converged on Times Square on Saturday hours after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the strikes on Iran. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani characterized the strikes as "a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression."
Police officials urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant amid ongoing security concerns. The enhanced patrols are being conducted out of an abundance of caution and follow established protocol for responding to international incidents that could affect the city.
