Álvaro Vargas Llosa, a writer and son of the late Nobel Prize laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, has accepted a proposal from Peru's President Keiko Fujimori to serve as the country's ambassador to the United States, with the embassy based in Washington D.C.
Fujimori announced the appointment during an interview with RPP on Thursday. "He was consulted and he has accepted this invitation. I consider that Álvaro Vargas Llosa will be a great ambassador of Peru in the United States," the president said.
Vargas Llosa confirmed his acceptance through a post on X, expressing gratitude to Fujimori for the confidence placed in him. "I deeply thank the President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, for the high confidence she has placed in me by proposing me to represent the Peruvian State as Ambassador of Peru to the United States of America," he wrote.
Vargas Llosa stated that, should the designation be ratified according to established procedures, he will place his experience and knowledge at the service of the diplomatic mission. Fujimori indicated that her administration is awaiting the completion of formal procedures and protocols to officially formalize the appointment.
The president emphasized that Vargas Llosa possesses considerable experience that will help strengthen relations between Peru and the United States. Vargas Llosa supported Fujimori's presidential campaign in 2021.
