Peru's government, led by right-wing President Keiko Fujimori, officially designated writer and journalist Álvaro Vargas Llosa as the country's ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the United States on Wednesday.
The appointment was formalized through Supreme Resolution No. 173-2026-RE, published in the official gazette El Peruano. The resolution bears the signatures of Fujimori and Foreign Minister Carlos Espá and received approval from the Council of Ministers in accordance with Article 118 of Peru's Political Constitution, which grants the executive branch authority to designate ambassadors.
Vargas Llosa is the eldest son of Mario Vargas Llosa, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010 and died in 2023.
According to the resolution, credentials and full powers will be extended to the new ambassador for the proper exercise of his duties. The document specifies that the exact date when Vargas Llosa will formally assume his functions in Washington, D.C., will be established through a subsequent ministerial resolution.
The Peruvian presidency stated in a communiqué that President Fujimori held a dialogue with Vargas Llosa regarding various aspects of Peru's foreign policy and the bilateral agenda with the United States as part of the appointment process.
The designation comes approximately one month after Fujimori initially announced the appointment.
