Orlando City SC officially announced on Friday that veteran goalkeeper Pedro Gallese will leave the Major League Soccer (MLS) club at the conclusion of the current season, ending a six-year tenure that began in 2020.
The club confirmed the departure, noting that the Peruvian national team keeper's contract would not be extended for the upcoming season. Sources indicated that the decision stemmed from an inability to reach an economic consensus during contract renewal negotiations between the 35-year-old player and the club's management.
Following the announcement, Gallese expressed surprise regarding the club's decision not to retain him. The goalkeeper, often nicknamed "El Pulpo," used social media to address the situation, stating that he "did not expect" his exit from the team.
Despite the unexpected nature of the departure for the player, Orlando City management praised Gallese's contributions to the organization. Ricardo Moreira, the general manager and sporting director for Orlando City, highlighted Gallese's impact both on and off the field.
"Pedro has been an exceptional ambassador for our club, both inside and outside the pitch," Moreira stated. "His professionalism, leadership, and unwavering commitment contributed to forging the culture we have today."
Gallese established himself as one of the most significant players in Orlando City history during his time with the team. He participated in 201 matches for the club across six seasons.
The goalkeeper holds several club records, including the most international matches played, total minutes played, saves recorded, total victories, and the highest number of clean sheets.
During his tenure, Orlando City achieved a major milestone by securing its first trophy in the MLS era, winning the US Open Cup in 2022. Gallese also helped the team reach the Concacaf Champions Cup tournament.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the year, Gallese is reportedly evaluating his next career steps. Media reports circulating within the MLS suggest that the goalkeeper is already attracting interest from other clubs.
One potential destination mentioned in reports is Inter Miami CF, the club featuring Argentine superstar Lionel Messi. Gallese, who is the starting goalkeeper for the Peruvian national team, will continue to assess his options as he prepares for the next phase of his career following the conclusion of his cycle with Orlando City.
