Hawaii voters are heading to the polls on Saturday for primary elections in the heavily Democratic state, with several races drawing attention as candidates compete for nominations.
In the 1st District, which includes Honolulu and other parts of Oʻahu, Rep. Ed Case faces a primary challenge from state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole. Case, 73, has represented the district since 2019. He previously served in the U.S. House representing the 2nd District, which encompasses more rural parts of Oʻahu and the other islands, from 2002 to 2007.
Keohokalole, 42, represents Kāneʻohe and Kailua in the state Senate. In an interview with Hawaii Public Radio, Keohokalole said he believes now is the time for change in the district. He pointed to Case's vote for the SAVE America Act in the House as part of his rationale for challenging the incumbent.
Case defended his record in comments to Hawaii Public Radio, emphasizing the value of seniority in the House. "The more you're here, the more influence you have, the more relationships you have, the more know-how you have, the more experience you have to get things done," Case said, citing his work during three consecutive crises.
