Kosovo's parliament was suspended Saturday after opposition lawmaker Time Kadrijaj threw eggs at caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a plenary session.
Kadrijaj, an MP from the conservative Alliance for the Future of Kosovo party, removed eggs from a bag and hurled them toward Kurti while shouting "Shame on you!" The incident occurred as Kurti was addressing parliament regarding negotiations with opposition parties over the election of a new speaker following June snap elections.
Kurti had told lawmakers he needed additional time to conduct talks with other parties before proposing a candidate for the speaker position. The announcement prompted the disruption. Kadrijaj threw at least four eggs in Kurti's direction before lawmakers and police officers intervened. The parliamentary speaker called for the live broadcast to be suspended, and security guards moved to protect Kurti.
Chaos escalated as members of Kurti's left-wing Vetevendosje party and police attempted to contain the situation. Another man pushed someone trying to restrain Kadrijaj, and she continued throwing eggs as people stood up from their seats. The parliamentary session was subsequently suspended.
In response to the incident, Kurti stated he was "happy to pay this price" if it was the cost of dialogue.
Kadrijaj's Alliance for the Future of Kosovo holds seven seats in parliament, making it the fourth-largest opposition group. The party is described as conservative.
Kurti's Vetevendosje party has a history of parliamentary disruptions. In 2018, party representatives launched tear gas inside the parliamentary chamber. The party also deployed tear gas on multiple occasions in 2015 when in opposition.
