Funeral ceremonies for Senator Lindsey Graham, the late South Carolina Republican, began Tuesday in Washington with an arrival ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. Graham's remains were carried by an Armed Forces Body Bearer team to honor his Air Force service, followed by a U.S. Capitol Police memorial guard.
The two-day services will culminate with a funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., where President Trump will deliver the eulogy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to attend the service. Both leaders are also scheduled to meet at the White House during their time in Washington.
Graham, a four-term senator, died on July 11 at age 71. A medical examiner determined his cause of death was an aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. He had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he visited Zelenskyy and discussed plans for new U.S. sanctions and tariffs against Russia.
Known for his close relationship with President Trump and his hawkish stance on foreign policy, Graham was a key player in a number of major bipartisan agreements during his tenure in the Senate. He was working on a new Russia sanctions bill at the time of his death, having met with Zelenskyy in Kyiv earlier this month to discuss the initiative.
On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal released footage shot by a documentary team in February related to Graham's activities and work.
The annual dinner was interrupted by a gunman in April. The new event will feature enhanced security and be held at the Waldorf Astoria.
