The Philippine House of Representatives voted Monday to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte for the second time, sending the case to the Senate for trial on charges of misusing public funds, amassing unexplained wealth, and making public threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and his cousin, the former House speaker.

A total of 257 out of 318 House members voted in favor of impeachment, far exceeding the one-third threshold required to advance the complaint to the Senate. Twenty-six members voted against the impeachment, while nine abstained.

Duterte, 47, was impeached on identical grounds in 2025, but the Supreme Court blocked the proceedings on a technicality before the Senate trial could begin. The case was revived this year after a House committee reviewed the evidence against her.

The House, dominated by allies of President Marcos Jr., approved sending the evidence to the Senate by a margin of 255 to 26, with nine abstentions. The impeachment articles focus on alleged misappropriation of public funds, unexplained assets, and bribery of public officials, alongside the alleged death threat against Marcos.

If convicted in the Senate trial, Duterte will be immediately removed from office and barred from holding elected positions for life. A conviction would derail her presidential ambitions for the 2028 election, in which she is currently leading early surveys as a candidate to replace Marcos.

If Duterte is acquitted, she would be protected from impeachment for two years. The Senate trial could begin as early as Wednesday, according to officials.

Duterte is the daughter of detained former President Rodrigo Duterte. She previously ran for vice president in a joint campaign with Marcos before their relationship deteriorated. In recent statements to reporters, Duterte described her relationship with Marcos as so "toxic" that she sometimes imagines beheading him.
