US President Donald Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on Tuesday that he wanted a swift end to the war in Ukraine, which would allow US-Russia ties to be fully restored, the Kremlin said. Putin supported the US president's view, according to the Kremlin's account.
The call lasted an hour, the Kremlin said. It followed a weekend visit to Moscow and Kyiv by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are attempting to revive stalled talks aimed at ending the fighting.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Trump and Putin discussed the outcome of the US peace negotiators' weekend visit. Both leaders rated the visit positively, Ushakov said. Putin told Trump what he believed the United States could do to help end the conflict, according to Ushakov.
Putin also gave Trump his assessment of the situation on the battlefield and made clear that Russia had no hostile plans towards Europe, Ushakov said.
The weekend diplomacy by Witkoff and Kushner did not produce any immediate public breakthrough, though the envoys raised the possibility that three-way talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States could resume. The Kremlin has said it does not rule out such talks.
Trump emphasized the desirability of bringing the conflict to an end as soon as possible, which he said would open up prospects for restored US-Russia relations, according to the Kremlin's readout of the conversation.
