U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14 and 15, the White House announced Wednesday. The visit marks Trump's first trip to China since returning to office in January 2025.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt disclosed the dates at a press briefing, describing the meeting as "long-awaited." Trump confirmed the announcement shortly after on social media, writing that representatives are finalizing preparations for the visits and that he looks forward to spending time with Xi in what will be "a Monumental Event."
The Beijing summit represents a roughly six-week postponement from its original schedule of late March to early April. Trump had requested the delay in mid-March, citing the need to remain in the United States to focus on the country's recently initiated war with Iran.
In addition to the Beijing meeting, Leavitt said Trump and first lady Melania Trump will host Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan for a reciprocal visit in Washington at a date to be announced later this year.
