Jabez Chakraborty, 22, was indicted Friday on charges of first-degree attempted assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon following a police shooting at his Queens home last month. He was arraigned virtually from a Queens hospital, where he has remained since the Jan. 26 incident in the Briarwood section of Queens.
The charges stem from an encounter in which Chakraborty allegedly wielded a kitchen knife at police officers who responded to a 911 call placed by his sister requesting involuntary transportation. According to prosecutors, Chakraborty lunged at his sister with the knife, and officers shot him multiple times during the brief encounter.
Chakraborty's sister told police that he "could have murdered" her, their parents, and their grandparents, according to statements quoted by prosecutors in court. Prosecutors sought to have Chakraborty remanded in custody and requested an order of protection for his family, but the remand request was denied. He was held on $50,000 cash bail.
Defense attorneys described the extent of Chakraborty's injuries from the shooting. He was shot twice in the abdomen, with one wound remaining open, twice in the chest, and twice in the groin. Attorneys characterized his condition as severe, stating "his body was shredded" by police gunfire.
The shooting and subsequent charges have drawn attention to the city's approach to mental health emergencies. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has questioned the police protocol in the case and expressed the view that criminal charges were not warranted, according to reporting on the indictment. The shooting itself is being investigated by authorities.
