Explosion at Russian petrochemical plant kills at least two, injures dozens

A powerful explosion occurred Tuesday at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim petrochemical plant in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, killing at least two people and injuring more than 50 others, according to reports.
The blast took place at the facility, which is part of Sibur, Russia's largest petrochemical holding. According to the company's website, the plant ranks among the world's largest producers of synthetic rubber and serves as a key enterprise in Sibur's Volga cluster operations.
Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev said efforts to localize the fire were ongoing following the explosion. "Specialists from accredited laboratories are monitoring air quality. No threat to residents or the environment has been detected," he wrote on social media.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been reported. A local Telegram channel, citing Russia's Emergencies Ministry, said that a "drone threat" alert had been declared in the region after the blast.
The incident comes as Ukraine has intensified strikes on Russian energy infrastructure in recent weeks.
