Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo as the country's new prime minister on Monday, replacing Ousmane Sonko, who was dismissed on Friday following months of escalating tensions between the two officials.
Sonko's removal came after a prolonged rift with the president over how to address Senegal's debt crisis. The dismissal triggered the resignation of all government members and the dissolution of the cabinet.
Lo, an economist, previously served as head of the Senegal branch of the Central Bank of West African States. He also held the positions of state minister to the president and secretary-general of Sonko's government. A presidential decree announcing his appointment noted that Lo possesses knowledge of "the inner workings of the economy and finance."
As the newly appointed prime minister, Lo is tasked with forming a new government.
In a significant political development on Tuesday, Senegal's parliament reinstated Sonko as a member and elected him as speaker of the National Assembly with 132 votes in favour. The parliamentary action occurred despite the president's earlier dismissal of Sonko, positioning the former prime minister with a powerful legislative platform.
