Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have been ordered to shelter in their docked spacecraft and prepare for potential evacuation as Russian crew members work to fix a worsening air leak in the orbital laboratory's Russian segment, NASA said Friday.

The four astronauts of NASA's Crew-12 mission—two U.S. astronauts, a French astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut—received evacuation preparation orders from NASA mission control at 9:04 a.m. ET on Friday. The crew was instructed to enter their Crew Dragon spacecraft and don their spacesuits in case an emergency evacuation became necessary.

The air leak is located in a service module transfer tunnel on the Russian portion of the station. Russian space agency Roscosmos has been working to patch cracks in that section that are causing air to escape into space. The leaks have been a longstanding concern for station operations.

NASA said the Russian crew is attempting to fix the worsening leak while the American and international astronauts remain in shelter status aboard their docked spacecraft. The agency did not provide a timeline for when the repair work would be completed or when the evacuation alert might be lifted.
