Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain's Popular Party, promised Tuesday to "secure" the country's border if he receives intelligence indicating a possible "invasion" similar to the mass migration that occurred in Ceuta in late July.
Speaking in an interview on Antena 3, Feijóo said that if his party comes to power, he would provide "all instruments to Spain's Intelligence Services" to alert him to developments on the border. He stated that intelligence agencies had previously warned the government of Pedro Sánchez about the large-scale migrant entry into Ceuta that took place approximately 40 days before his remarks.
Feijóo indicated he would act on intelligence assessments and, if necessary, would apply Article 8 of Spain's Constitution. He did not elaborate on the specific measures Article 8 would authorize.
The PP leader also addressed Spain's relationship with Morocco. He said he wants to maintain a "good relationship" and be "loyal" to Morocco if he reaches the prime minister's office, but stated that the neighboring country must "respect" Spain and reciprocate that loyalty. Feijóo framed border security as contingent on mutual respect between the two nations.
The Ceuta incident referenced by Feijóo occurred in late July 2026, when a large number of migrants entered the Spanish enclave in North Africa. The event prompted discussion about border security and migration policy in Spain.
