A magnitude 5 earthquake struck southern Spain early Saturday, with its epicenter in the municipality of Alhendín in Granada province, Andalucía. The tremor occurred at 1:04 a.m. local time at a depth of two kilometers, according to the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN).
The earthquake caused material damage to homes and vehicles across the region but resulted in no reported injuries. Authorities said the tremor was felt throughout Andalucía's provinces except Huelva and Cádiz, and prompted more than 80 emergency service calls.
The regional government of Andalucía activated its emergency phase for seismic risk, classified as operational situation 1, in response to the earthquake. Authorities advised residents to remain calm and avoid entering or leaving buildings.
Initial assessments by local authorities documented material damage to residential and vehicle property. Officials continued evaluating the full extent of impacts and potential structural damage to buildings in the affected area.
Granada is located in one of the Iberian Peninsula's zones of highest seismic activity, positioned near the interaction zone between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.
