A man and a woman have been arrested by the Ertzaintza, the Basque regional police, in Irun, Gipuzkoa, on suspicion of terrorism offenses after authorities discovered they possessed sensitive information about security forces and details concerning weapons and explosives.
Both individuals have relevant criminal records, according to a statement from the Department of Security, which did not specify the nature of those records. Sources linked to the investigation told EFE that the two are connected to radical sectors of the left-wing abertzale movement, which opposes the official strategy adopted following the end of ETA violence.
The investigation began on September 26 when Ertzaintza officers conducted a checkpoint in Eskoriatza, Gipuzkoa. During the control, agents identified three individuals carrying what authorities described as "highly sensitive material" related to security and police forces. Officers also noted a possible location where material presumed to be weapons and explosives might be stored.
The Basque Department of Security confirmed the arrests in a formal statement but provided limited additional details about the case. The timing of the arrests comes as Spain marks 15 years since the end of ETA's armed campaign, which had spanned decades and resulted in hundreds of deaths.
The two detainees remain under investigation for terrorism-related charges. Authorities have not released further information regarding the specific nature of the documents recovered or the status of the suspected weapons cache.
