Matteo Berrettini's run at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters ended in the round of 16 Thursday, as the Italian fell to Brazil's Joao Fonseca 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 13 minutes.
The 29-year-old Roman, ranked 90th in the ATP, had recently defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-0 in doubles but could not maintain that form in singles competition. Fonseca, ranked 40th globally, advances to the quarterfinals, where he will face either Alexander Zverev or Zizou Bergs.
Jannik Sinner, the world number 2, remains Italy's sole representative in the main draw. The South Tyrolean advanced through earlier rounds, defeating Ugo Humbert without difficulty. Sinner withdrew from the doubles tournament alongside Bergs to focus exclusively on singles competition, a decision mirrored by Bergs, who defeated Daniil Rublev in his singles match.
Sinner faced Czech player Tomas Machac in the round of 16 on Thursday afternoon on Court Rainier III, following the Zverev-Bergs quarterfinal match that began at 1 p.m. local time. The pair have met four times previously, with Sinner holding a 3-0 record in their head-to-head matchups. Their prior encounters took place at Miami and Shanghai in 2024 and at Doha in the same year.
In their Thursday match, Sinner won the first set 6-1. Machac, who upset Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets to reach the round of 16, took the second set to a tiebreak, which he won 7-6. By the third set, Sinner had established a 3-1 lead.
The Monte-Carlo Masters is the third ATP Masters 1000 event of the 2026 season, held on the clay courts of the Country Club of Monte-Carlo in the Principality of Monaco. The tournament carries a total prize purse of 6,309,095 euros.
Carlos Alcaraz was scheduled to play immediately after Sinner's match against Argentine Tomás Etcheverry, described as a skilled clay-court player.
