Gotham FC earned a 2-1 away victory over Racing Louisville FC on Friday night at Lynn Family Stadium, ending a three-match winless run and extending their lead atop the NWSL Shield standings.
Guro Reiten opened the scoring in the eighth minute with her first career NWSL goal. The play began on the left flank, with Jaedyn Shaw involved before delivering a pass to Reiten at the edge of the box. Reiten struck cleanly with her left foot into the high left corner of the net from a corner phase.
Racing Louisville responded nine minutes later. Courtney Petersen struck the post from a tight angle, and the rebound phase remained active before Louisville equalized.
Jaedyn Shaw restored Gotham's lead immediately after halftime, scoring her fourth game-winning goal of the season. Shaw also recorded an assist on Reiten's opening goal, leading the match in Sofascore's ratings.
The victory completed Gotham FC's season sweep of Racing Louisville and pushed the visitors five points clear of second-place Washington Spirit in the NWSL Shield race. Gotham FC dominated possession with 72 percent of the ball, a significant increase from their 55 percent against Denver Summit FC in their previous match.
Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós said after the match, "It was a game that we are very proud of the outcome because it was really a team performance. We needed everyone. We spoke about it before: Louisville presents a battle – they're very direct – and we needed to make sure we work hard on those situations. But we needed to also be good on the ball, pay attention to the details with the set pieces, be more offensive."
Rookie forward Jordynn Dudley spoke following the victory, noting the team's determination to secure the three points in Kentucky. Midfielder Jaedyn Shaw reflected on recording a goal and an assist on the one-year anniversary of her joining Gotham FC.
The win marked a return to Gotham FC's typical style of play. The team scored twice, one more goal than they had managed in their previous three fixtures combined. Racing Louisville's playoff hopes were further diminished by the loss; they now sit 11 points out of the playoffs with a maximum of 18 points to gain.
Gotham FC next faces the North Carolina Courage on Saturday, September 19, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. ET in Cary, North Carolina, concluding their three-game road trip.
