Gotham FC, the 2025 NWSL champions, is exploring a relocation to New York City FC's planned soccer-specific stadium in Queens, according to reports Wednesday.
The clubs are in advanced talks about a potential deal, Sportico reported. Several sources told The Post that nothing has been finalized. The move could occur as soon as 2027 or 2028, depending on the stadium's opening timeline.
Gotham has called Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, home since 2021, sharing the venue with MLS side New York Red Bulls. The club has been based in New Jersey since its 2009 inception as Sky Blue.
The planned Etihad Park in Queens will be a 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium as part of the second phase of the Willets Point redevelopment plan. The $780 million facility is set to open in 2027 and will serve as NYCFC's primary home.
"Like many clubs, especially in the NWSL as the league rapidly grows, we regularly evaluate options to best support our players, supporters, and organization," Gotham said in a statement.
Despite winning two NWSL championships in the last three years, Gotham has faced attendance challenges. The team averaged 8,892 fans per game last year at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
The potential move would make Gotham the first NWSL team to play in New York City's first pro soccer-specific stadium. NYCFC currently plays some of their matches at other venues in the region.
