Gotham FC mounted a comeback victory over the Kansas City Current on Friday night, defeating the visitors 2-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey to extend its first-place lead in the NWSL standings.
The Current struck with remarkable speed, with Amelia White scoring just 22 seconds into the match—tying an NWSL record for the fastest goal. The early strike ended Gotham's shutout streak at 307 minutes across three consecutive matches. Croix Bethune recorded her league-leading ninth assist on the goal.
Gotham responded swiftly. Midge Purce equalized in the 13th minute, and Sam Kerr put the hosts ahead in the 41st minute to secure the comeback. The victory improved Gotham to 13-3-4 and extended the team's unbeaten streak to eight games. Kansas City fell to 9-8-3.
In other NWSL action Friday, the San Diego Wave and Denver Summit played to a 1-1 draw, while the Seattle Reign defeated the Chicago Stars 1-0.
The Utah Royals also won on Friday, defeating Bay FC 3-2 in Sandy, Utah. The match featured a historic performance from Utah's Japanese contingent: Miyabi Moriya, Narumi Miura and Mina Tanaka all scored, marking the first time three Japanese players have scored in the same NWSL match.
Karlie Lema gave Bay FC an early lead in the sixth minute, but Moriya tied it a minute later. Miura put Utah ahead in the 22nd minute with a shot from outside the box. Bay defender Heather Gilchrist equalized with her first professional goal before Tanaka sealed the win with a penalty shot in the 79th minute. Utah improved to 11-6-3, while Bay FC dropped to 5-10-4. Bay FC's newest acquisition, defender Jenna Nighswonger, made her debut as a substitute in the 62nd minute.
