Gotham FC defeated the Kansas City Current 2-0 Friday night at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio, to win the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup, the club's first title of the season.
Esther González opened the scoring in the 37th minute, converting a penalty kick after Kansas City defender Lo'eau LaBonta fouled Jaelin Howell in the box. Jordynn Dudley sealed the victory in the 79th minute with a low shot to the far corner that Current goalkeeper Marisa Jordan could not reach.
Gotham qualified for the match as the defending NWSL champions from the previous season, while Kansas City earned their spot as the 2025 Shield winners, having posted the best regular season record. The Challenge Cup, held at a neutral site for the first time, pits the league's reigning champion against its regular season champion.
Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger delivered a standout performance for Gotham, making several key saves to preserve the clean sheet. Early in the match, Berger was called into action in the eighth minute when Kansas City midfielder Croix Bethune forced a turnover high up the pitch after pressuring defender Tierna Davidson. The loose ball fell dangerously inside the box, but Berger reacted quickly and made herself big to deny the chance.
Kansas City mounted pressure throughout the opening stages, but Gotham's defensive display kept the match scoreless until González's penalty conversion. In the 63rd minute, Kansas City thought it had found an equalizer when Temwa Chawinga unleashed a strike, but the goal was ruled offside.
The match was played under torrential rain and marked the first professional women's soccer game ever held in the state of Ohio. More than 11,000 fans attended the match at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field.
Columbus was awarded an NWSL franchise in April that will begin play in 2028, bringing the league to 18 teams. The franchise is owned by the Haslam Sports Group, which also owns the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer.
Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said after the match that he was proud of the team's performance. "From my position as the head coach, I've been super proud of the group of players and staff," Amorós said. "The way they go on the pitch every time, it's with the mentality to win, to attack, to be ourselves -- and the desire to do that not only on the offensive side but the defensive side collectively."
Gotham FC returns to regular season play on Saturday, July 5, against the San Diego Wave at Snapdragon Stadium.
