Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen announced Friday that she will not compete at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 due to a scheduling conflict with a mandatory WTA tournament.
Tjen, currently ranked 36th in the world, made the announcement through her Instagram account on September 11. The Asian Games are scheduled to take place at the same time as the WTA 1000 Beijing tournament, which is mandatory for players meeting participation criteria.
According to Tjen's statement, she requested an exemption from the WTA to allow her to compete at the Asian Games but was denied. She said the decision came after careful consideration and was difficult to make, as she will be unable to represent Indonesia at the continental sporting event.
"After much consideration, I have to make a difficult decision that I cannot compete at the Asian Games this year, which takes place at the same time as the mandatory WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing," Tjen said in her Instagram post.
Tjen indicated she must continue her WTA Tour schedule according to the competition calendar that has been set. The WTA 1000 Beijing tournament is a mandatory event for players who meet the eligibility requirements, leaving her unable to participate in both competitions simultaneously.
The withdrawal comes after Indonesia's women's tennis team achieved success at the Southeast Asian Games in 2025, where the team defeated Thailand 2-1 to secure a gold medal.
