Javier Mascherano has stepped down as Inter Miami's manager, the club announced Tuesday, just months after leading the team to their first MLS title in December 2025.
Mascherano, who arrived at Inter Miami in November 2024 to replace Gerardo Martino, cited personal reasons for his resignation. His coaching staff will also depart the club. Sporting director Guillermo Hoyos will assume the role of head coach on an interim basis.
"I want to communicate to you that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my time as Inter Miami's manager," Mascherano said in an official club statement.
The 41-year-old Argentine had been contracted through 2027. His tenure lasted approximately 18 months and included Inter Miami's participation in the Club World Cup, where the team reached the round of 16, as well as the domestic league championship.
In his statement, Mascherano thanked the club for its confidence in him, the organization's employees for their collective effort, and the players for making the title-winning season possible. He also acknowledged the supporters and the club's fan group, La Familia.
"I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best moving forward," he added.
Mascherano's arrival at Inter Miami marked his first experience managing a senior club team. Prior to joining the MLS franchise, he had worked exclusively with Argentina's youth national teams. His departure comes as a surprise in the American soccer landscape, where such sudden managerial changes are uncommon, particularly at a high-profile organization like Inter Miami, which operates with significant resources and recently unveiled a new stadium.
