More than 10,000 runners took part in the sold-out NYRR Staten Island Half on Sunday, one of New York Road Runners' marquee fall races and a key stop on the road to the TCS New York City Marathon.
The 13.1-mile course showcased Staten Island's waterfront, with views of New York Harbor and the city skyline. The route passed Fort Wadsworth and several of the borough's parks before finishing on Bay Street.
The event drew runners from across the region. Among the participants was Staten Island native and "Jersey Shore" television personality Vinny Guadagnino, who ran the race in his hometown.
Nearly 200 children ages 2 to 11 also participated in Rising NYRR races held at SIUH Community Park, home of the Staten Island FerryHawks. The youth races ran concurrently with the main half marathon event.
The Staten Island Half serves as a preparatory race for runners training for the TCS New York City Marathon, which takes place later in the fall season. The sold-out status of the event reflected strong regional interest in the race.
