NWSL adopts rule changes for Challenge Cup and summer restart

The National Women's Soccer League will implement a series of rule changes beginning with this weekend's Challenge Cup between NWSL champions Gotham FC and Shield winners Kansas City Current.

The changes, developed in consultation with the NWSL Players Association, clubs, medical and competition staff, and the Professional Referee Organization, focus on player safety and fan behavior. Some measures mirror rules adopted at the 2026 FIFA men's World Cup.

Under the new off-field treatment rule—the most significant on-field change—players who remain on the ground and require medical personnel to enter the field after play is stopped will be required to leave the field for a one-minute treatment period. This rule mirrors one introduced at this summer's World Cup.

A timed substitution rule will also take effect. Players being substituted will now have 10 seconds to leave the field.

The NWSL has simplified its heat safety procedures. Games will be paused for 150 to 180 seconds when the wet bulb globe temperature falls between 82.3 degrees Fahrenheit and 92.1 degrees Fahrenheit. This update to the league's game day heat safety policy reflects heightened attention to player welfare during summer competition.

The league has also expanded its fan code of conduct to formally include digital and social media spaces, broadening the scope of behavioral expectations beyond in-stadium conduct.

These rule changes take effect this weekend with the Challenge Cup matchup between Gotham FC and Kansas City Current.
