Russian tennis player Alexandrova collapses at Memphis Classic

Ekaterina Alexandrova collapsed on court and retired from her first-round match at the Memphis Classic due to heat-related illness, giving 16-year-old compatriot Kristina Liutova victory in her WTA Tour debut.

Alexandrova, the tournament's No. 1 seed and world No. 19, was trailing 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 5-4 against Liutova when she fell to the ground during a point. The match had lasted more than three hours under extreme conditions, with temperatures reaching approximately 34 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit) in Memphis, Tennessee.

The match was initially paused as Alexandrova attempted to continue playing. The 31-year-old Russian received a time violation for taking too long to serve as she struggled with the heat. However, during the next point, she collapsed on the court and required immediate medical attention.

After receiving medical care, Alexandrova was able to stand but was unable to continue the match. She left the court in a wheelchair and forfeited the contest. The audience applauded as she departed the court.

Liutova's victory marked her debut on the WTA Tour. The teenager was left in tears on court amid the chaotic circumstances surrounding the match's conclusion.
