Australian striker Sam Kerr has signed with Gotham FC in the National Women's Soccer League, the reigning champion club announced Monday. The 32-year-old joins on a contract through the 2030 season as a free agent following her departure from Chelsea.

Kerr spent the past six and a half years with Chelsea, where she scored 116 goals across all competitions in 158 appearances. During her time in London, she won five Women's Super League titles, three FA Cups, and three League Cups. She finished as Chelsea's joint all-time leading scorer in the Women's Super League, level with Fran Kirby, and was the 2023 Ballon d'Or runner-up.

The move marks a return to the NWSL for Kerr, who previously played for the club from 2015 to 2017 when it was known as Sky Blue FC. During that earlier stint, she scored 28 goals for the team and won the league MVP award in 2017 and 2019. She also played for the Chicago Red Stars in 2018 and 2019 before joining Chelsea in November 2019.

Kerr remains the NWSL's all-time leading regular-season goalscorer with 77 career goals despite her six-year absence from the league. She led the league in scoring for three consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2019 and won the Golden Boot three times.

Beyond club soccer, Kerr is Australia's all-time leading international goalscorer among men and women, with 75 goals. She surpassed men's record holder Tim Cahill, who scored 51 goals. She led the Matildas to the semifinals of the 2023 Women's World Cup, hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

"I'm incredibly excited to return to Gotham FC and to this city," Kerr said in a statement. "This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special. The ambition here is clear, and I'm looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history."

Yael Averbuch West, Gotham's president of soccer operations, said Kerr is "one of the defining players of her generation and a game-changing talent who has consistently delivered at the highest levels of world football."

Kerr will join Gotham pending international transfer certificate clearance. The club won the Challenge Cup on Friday with a 2-0 victory over Kansas City Current.
