Stefano De Martino will conduct and serve as artistic director of the 77th Sanremo Festival in 2027, Carlo Conti announced Saturday during the finale of the 76th edition of Italy's premier music competition.
Conti made the announcement shortly after 11 p.m. local time, descending into the audience at the Teatro Ariston to address De Martino, who was present at the venue. "For the first time at the Sanremo Festival, I can officially announce that Stefano will be the conductor and artistic director of the next Festival," Conti said at 11:14 p.m., approaching De Martino's seat. The Ariston audience responded with extended applause.
De Martino, 36, visibly moved by the announcement, thanked RAI for the opportunity and pledged to begin work on the 2027 edition. The announcement marked the first instance of a future Sanremo host being revealed directly from the festival stage.
De Martino, born in Torre Annunziata, has become a prominent RAI television personality through programs including "L'anno che verrà " and "Affari tuoi." His ironic and engaging style has established him as a leading figure in Italian broadcasting.
Speculation about De Martino's appointment had circulated for months, with endorsements from entertainment figures including Fiorello. RAI officials had declined to confirm or deny reports in the days preceding Saturday's announcement, deferring disclosure until the conclusion of the 76th festival edition. The news agency Adnkronos had reported the appointment earlier Saturday.
De Martino will debut as festival conductor in February 2027.
