Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, announced Tuesday the launch of Americas Connect, an expansion of its global submarine cable network that includes three new systems across the Americas. The project aims to strengthen digital connectivity and infrastructure resilience in the region.
The three new cable systems are Alisios, Canoa, and OlaLuz. Alisios will connect the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Chile across the Pacific Ocean, establishing a direct route between Chile and the Caribbean nations. Canoa will link the Dominican Republic with Bermuda, while OlaLuz will connect the Dominican Republic with Florida.
The Alisios cable represents a strategic component for Chile's technological development, according to Google. The company stated that the primary objective of the deployment is to guarantee resilience of cloud traffic flow beyond simply increasing data throughput. The cable will traverse the Pacific Ocean to establish the direct connection between Chile and Panama and the Dominican Republic.
A Chilean government official, identified as the biminister De Grange, valued the Alisios route as a decisive boost for local digital and productive development. Chile has been seeking to consolidate its position as a regional digital hub, and the new submarine cable infrastructure supports that objective.
The Americas Connect initiative represents Google's broader strategy to expand its submarine cable infrastructure across the Americas, with the three new systems providing enhanced connectivity options and redundancy for the region's digital infrastructure.
