Instagram updates wordmark logo after decade, drawing mixed user reaction

Instagram changed its wordmark logo on Thursday, moving away from the recognizable cursive typeface the platform has used for the past decade. The updated wordmark combines cursive and print-style lettering in a design the company describes as cleaner and more modern.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced the change on the platform itself. "The wordmark at the top of the app hasn't changed in 10 years, so it was time to refresh it," Mosseri said. "Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that's always made it Instagram."

Mosseri did not address changes to the app's icon itself—the recognizable square featuring a camera lens over a gradient background in purple and orange tones that accompanied the previous wordmark identity.

The executive also shared the new logo on Threads, Meta's text-based social platform integrated with Instagram, noting that he wanted to see the "controversial opinions" users might have about the redesign.

The new wordmark has generated mixed reactions among users. Some commenters have noted that the updated design appears to read as "Instagzam" rather than "Instagram," citing concerns about legibility. Others have expressed nostalgia for the previous cursive wordmark, which had become iconic to the platform's visual identity over its decade-long use.
