The Trump administration has lifted export controls on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models, ending a standoff that began three weeks earlier, the company announced Tuesday evening.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick communicated the decision in a letter to Anthropic cofounder Tom Brown, stating that "a license is no longer required for the export, reexport, or in-country transfer, including deemed export or deemed reexport, of the Mythos or Fable models."

Anthropic said it would begin restoring access to the models on Wednesday. "We're grateful to our users for their patience, and to everyone who worked with us on redeploying the models," the company said in a statement.

The models had been suspended on June 12 after the Commerce Department imposed export restrictions citing national security concerns. The ban required Anthropic to suspend all use by foreign nationals inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic employees. The restrictions affected Fable, a consumer version of Mythos with additional safeguards, and Mythos itself, the company's most advanced AI model.

According to Lutnick's statement, Anthropic addressed the risks that prompted the initial ban. "Anthropic has agreed to proactively detect and address security risks associated with the models," the Commerce Department said in its letter. The department had previously expressed concern that the models could be used by hackers to exploit weaknesses in computer systems.

Lutnick said his department had been coordinating with Anthropic on the approval of its frontier models. "We have worked closely with Anthropic to analyze and approve Fable 5 to ensure alignment across the U.S. government and strengthen America's leadership in AI," he said.

The reversal came after the crackdown on Anthropic drew criticism from technology executives and investors. Some observers noted that the restrictions had provided time for Chinese open-source developers attempting to narrow the technology gap with the United States.
