The United Nations warned Monday that accelerating artificial intelligence development threatens all human rights, with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk cautioning that the technology poses existential risks across multiple domains of human life.
"All human rights are at risk, including the rights to life, food, privacy, health and security," Türk said in a statement, citing the rapid pace of AI advancement as a qualitative leap toward greater existential dangers.
"The current race toward increasingly powerful AI represents a qualitative leap toward greater existential risks for all aspects of our lives," the UN human rights chief stated. His warning came after technology sector employees have called for slowing the development of the technology.
Türk specifically highlighted concerns about agentic AI, a category of artificial intelligence that extends beyond conventional systems and can make autonomous decisions. According to the UN official, this type of AI is demonstrating failures that "could paralyze essential services, fracture communications, destabilize critical infrastructure and strike at the heart of democratic institutions."
The high commissioner warned of potential consequences for vulnerable populations. "Entire populations could be left without access to water," Türk cautioned, pointing to the cascading effects that AI system failures could have on essential services and basic human needs.
