Ben Shelton advanced to the US Open final Saturday after defeating Frances Tiafoe in four sets during the men's semi-final at Flushing Meadows.
Following his victory, Shelton became the first Black man to play in the US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972. Andy Roddick remains the last American man to win the tournament title.
In his on-court remarks, Shelton reflected on his family's role in his career. "It's a lot of emotion," he said. "My dad, my mom have sacrificed a lot for me to be in this position today. My dad lost his mom earlier this year, and she's the reason that he was able to play tennis. Without her, there's no Ben Shelton standing here today. So this one is for her. This one is for her."
Shelton then addressed the crowd ahead of Sunday's final match in Arthur Ashe Stadium. "I'm going for it here," he said. "I'm gonna leave it all on the court. I hope you guys are coming back with me. Let's do this for the USA."
Shelton also acknowledged the significance of the date on which the semi-final took place. "It's a difficult day to be out here playing," he said. "My thoughts and prayers go out to" those affected.
The final is scheduled for Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
